1. How The First Baptist Church Family Came Into Existence.
A small group of Christians, committed to the mission of reaching the Ozark area with the Gospel of Jesus Christ, established First Baptist Church of Ozark (FBCO) in 1868.
2. How The Family of First Baptist Church Developed.
In 1873 they worshipped in a church building located one block east of the square. Almost 20 years later the church relocated just a few blocks north of the square. Then in 1920, they constructed the yellow brick building that now sits on the northeast corner of the square. This building was restored in 1937 after a fire caused considerable damage. The growing church family added an educational building in 1964 and an activities building in 1976.
3. Why The Present First Baptist Church Family Exists Today.
It exists to fulfill the same mission held by that small group of committed Christians who established the church 129 years ago . . . to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
4. Why We Changed The Church's Location In Order to Fulfill That Mission.
Nearly 12 years ago, it became increasingly evident to the membership of the First Baptist Church Family that our church facilities located on the northeast corner of the square in Ozark were inadequate to meet the future needs of our strategically located and rapidly growing community. This awareness prompted the formation of the Survey, Planning and Building Committee (SPB) on July 14, 1986. After prayerfully and carefully evaluating the various available options, it became clear, both to the committee and the church family, that God was leading the church to relocate. This would provide an opportunity for the church to become a center of Christian outreach, training, service, worship and love in order to more effectively meet the spiritual needs of the community.
5. What A Miracle This Church Building Represents.
Be assured that the undertaking of this God-sized task seemed overwhelming at first to the Church Family. When it was adopted, one was reminded of the words of certain cathedral builders centuries ago who said . . . "Let us build to the glory of God a cathedral building so massive in structure that those who follow us will think us mad for attempting it."However, with a gift of land, the help of Volunteer Christian Builders, and the sacrificial giving of Gods people, the "mad attempt" (miracle) began with ground breaking in April, 1990. The educational space was finished and occupied on January 19, 1992. The Church Family celebrated Easter of 1993 in the new worship center, and dedicated the entire relocated church facility to the "glory of God" on October 17, 1993.
6. The Miracle Continues.
On Sunday March 13, 2004 the Survey, Planning, and Building Committee recommended to our church a proposed Building Project. Construction on our new addition began in June of 2005. In July of 2006, we opened our doors to additional educational space, a multi-media facility, a multi-purpose Family Life Center and additional parking space. A secured Preschool and Children facility fills the new educational space. In our Family Life Center we have cardio vascular equipment, free-weight area and a running track in addtion to the first floor multi-purpose gymnasium. Also a large Commons area with a Coffee Bar was created for the enjoyment of all our members and visitors.
Whether you are a recent or long-time member of our Church Family, you are part of the ongoing miracle as this church facility is used by God to fulfill His mission in Ozark.
